Is Computer Science Geeky?
Simply NO. Computer Science is not a specialized field filled with geeks, but rather intelligent individuals. This job profession is geared to certain individuals that find this type of work exciting and interesting. Anyone can say that anyone else is a geek. Being a geek is not defined by the job that you work. For instance, if you look at a nurse, you may say that they are a geek because they have to learn about the human body and how it operates. However, if you look at a scientist you may say that they are a geek because they know what reaction will occur if two liquids are combined. Being a geek should make someone proud. All it simply means is that a particular person knows a lot about a specific topic. Back in the day, hearing someone being called a "geek" brought to someones mind the picture of a person with big glasses, not fashionable outfit choices, and someone who does not have a lot of friends. Back then, being called a "geek" hurt people's feelings and it was an insult rather than a compliment. However, now-a-days being called a "geek" is a good thing and everyone has a little bit of geeky-ness in them. Being smart is brought to every profession and all the individuals must be smart in order to be a good employee and get their tasks done efficiently. So in conclusion, computer science is not a geeky field because this term can be brought to any job profession, and not just one particular one.

Computer Science, Gordon Moore
What is Computer Science?
"Computer Science is the systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression, and mechanization of the methodical processes (or algorithms) that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to information, whether such information is encoded in bits and bytes in a computer memory or transcribed in genes and protein structures in a human cell." - http://www.cs.bu.edu/AboutCS/WhatIsCS.pdf
Wow, that definition is quite heavy, but I think it sums it up very nicely and it is easy to read. The definition is straight forward and is easy to understand. Examples of material things that are "computer science," include...
1) ipod
2) phone
3) television
4) computer/laptop
5) GPS
6) xbox console
Computer Science materials are all around you. If you reach into your pocket you will find your phone, if you open your backpack you will find a laptop, if you open your gym bag you will find an ipod. Computer Science is very important and our world will become more computerized in the future.
Gordon Moore is a significant figure in the fouding of Moore's Law. "Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history of computing hardware whereby the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years." This law proves that there are increasing amounts of
1) processing speed
2) capacity of memory
3) size of pixels
with each increasing year. Lastly, Gordon Moore is an important figure because he helped discover the fact that the number of transistors will double every 2-3 years. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law
The movie shown in class was really interesting to watch because it showed how Computer Science has changed over years and proved the point that technology and computers were very important in our past, are in our present life, and will be in the future.

The Importance of Computers
Question: Why is it important to learn about computers and how they affect our lives?
Computers act as a huge part in our lives and without them, our lives would be chaotic. Computers act as a go-to device for our every need. For instance, if we don't know how to cook something or we need a recipe we can just go to.. http://www.google.com/ and type in - dinner recipe. If we were to do this, there would be about 101,000,000 results. But let's say that you are hungry for lunch instead. If you went to google and typed in lunch recipe, you would be able to choose from over 65,500,000 results. Google is just 1 popular website that is used on a daily basis in order to find an answer for your question.
It is important to learn about computers themselves because it is a good way to learn how machines come alive. If we weren't taught about computers, then we wouldn't be able to fix them when they broke. Computers are essential in this day and age, and practically everyone in the United States has about 1 per household.
Not only are computers being used for personal assignments, but they are actually affecting the lives of children more and more with each generation. For instance, in schools, computers are being put in every classroom as a learning tool. Computers can help students study by having a game on them that can test a kid in a certain subject- English, writing, math, history, science, a foreign language, etc. Computers affect our lives much more than they did in the past but that does not mean it's a bad thing. Having technology be a part of our every day means that our nation is becoming more modern, and helping people in ways now that wasn't capable generations ago.
Computers are important in our everyday lives, and it will continue to be this way. Computers are now able to be mobile, so people are connected wherever they go. Computers will just keep upgrading every year and so forth. Technology is important to us, and from here on out, I believe that it will become more important to us in the future.
Some interesting websites that I found while using the computer myself were:
http://www.facebook.com/ (socializing site)
http://www.hulu.com/ (able to watch shows)
http://www.comcast.net/ (used for e-mail purposes)

Learning to Love Yourself
Growing up, the thought to love yourself is a hard concept to grasp. The main question at hand is.. Do I love myself?
When I was a little girl, I was the ultimate tomboy. I dedicate my tomboy upbringing after living with my five brothers and one older sister. My twin brother and I are the youngest members in my family, being 19 years old now. When I was little I had to associate myself with my brothers all the time in every type of activity- snow mobiling, fishing, sports (basketball, soccer, track, snowboarding), etc..
As you can imagine, I didn't have good sense of style growing up being surrounded by boys. I was never into high heels, dresses, lipstick or any of the typical girly equipment. Growing up, I loved to wear adidas sneakers, basketball shorts that went down to my knees, and my hair was always in a ponytail. To this day, I still don't know how to curl my hair but I don't care to learn because I love being me and I feel like I don't have to fit the "girl" look to fit into society.
I was a very self-conscious girl until I reached my first year at my University, being 18 years of age. During my elementary, middle, and high school years I always had a lot of friends and boyfriends, but I wasn't confident in myself. I used to always look at the other girls in my grade and think that I didn't fit in. I wasn't the flirty-type girl who wore the latest fashion trends and name brand clothes. I was the sporty girl who wore sweatpants with my hair in a messy bun. I was a very outgoing girl, don't get me wrong, but I didn't consider myself to be "beautiful".
When I started my first year at my University I gained a lot of self confidence for myself. I made the University's soccer team and became a starting freshman. My parents and family were very proud of me and I always saw my dad and twin brother at all my games. My brother was my biggest fan. Christian was always yelling in the stands, and after the game he would come up to me and hug me as a congratulations and tell me how well I played. This boosted my self confidence. He is the one who made me push to be better, and would help me train in order to better myself. To this day, he still encourages me in everything I do, and I do the same for him. Our twin bond is so strong, he means everything to me.
Also during my first year at my University, I began to feel beautiful. While growing up I never felt like a "girly girl" because of the way I was raised. I didn't feel comfortable in my own body because I used to have more muscular legs than other girly girls (because of playing soccer, or snowboarding, etc.- all muscle). I used to wear loose-fitting jeans or sweatpants, with a loose fitting shirt. I just didn't feel comfortable in tight clothing because I didn't like the way I looked. I used to think I was fat, but all along I knew I wasn't at all. I just didn't believe in myself, and I have found that believing in yourself is the most important concept a person can do. If you have faith in yourself, than anything you do will be successful and will boost your self confidence.
Many years later after high school, I learned to love myself. I love my body, my sense of style, my hair, etc. I would not want to trade myself with anyone else. I may not be the "girly-girl," but I sure am outgoing, very fun to be around, and a very friendly girl with a lot of friends. I now wear tighter clothing than before because now I am confident in myself, and I believe in everything I do.
I believe that your school years is a time to figure out who you are and what type of person you want to become. These years are for you to define yourself, and become your own individual. These years are for you to learn to love yourself, and be confident in your own skin. Yes, it may have taken me 19 years to love myself, but hey.. I LOVE MYSELF NOW. I believe that everyone needs to love themselves for who they are and be confident in themselves because you were born perfectly and everyone deserves to have high self confidence.
I hope that after reading this you learn a little bit about myself, but that this post makes you look at your own life and hopefully helps you learn to love yourself just as much as I do. Loving yourself does not make you stuck-up and snobby, but rather boosts your confidence and you will enjoy life a lot more. Hopefully you learn to love yourself faster than I came to love myself, but once you reach that goal and understanding, nothing can bring you down. :)
